New Hall Valley Country Park is a nature conservation site situated north east of Birmingham in the town of Sutton Coldfield. This former farmland covers 198 acres of green belt countryside and forms a corridor between Walmley and Sutton town centre. It is an important nature reserve consisting of historic wetland grazing meadows, Plants Brook stream and a number of listed buildings including a working 17th century corn mill, and a moated 14th century hotel.
The story of Sutton Arts Theatre started one evening in 1944 when Paul Rice called unexpectedly with a proposition to put to Bill Wesley Harkcom. Paul intended to produce a play somewhere in Sutton Coldfield and was having trouble finding a leading man.
In 1946 Sutton Arts Council was formed, after the Libraries and Arts committees of Sutton invited representatives of local dramatic societies to form a central body. This amalgamation resulted in the new company producing three plays a year. Sutton Town Hall continued to be used to stage the productions.
Considering we’ve not moved an inch since 1869 and still use Victorian brewing equipment, you might think the Caley has enjoyed a placid history.
In reality we’ve been through more ups and downs than a Deuchars handpull. We were born out of the flames of a tragic fire, and have suffered two calamitous blazes since.
The brewery has passed through many hands and came within a whisker of closing in the Eighties.
There have also been many highs. Lorimer’s Scotch Ale in the old days and Deuchars IPA more recently were so good they changed brewing for ever.
And the fact we’re still here, still creating beer in the way that our founders would recognise, is perhaps the greatest triumph of all.
